Dance Auditions

Just like a job "interview" for a position in the business world, a dance audition is the opportunity for you to market yourself and your talents. As most dancers who are auditioning along with you will be talented enough to get the job, what will help you to be the stand-out among them?

One of the first things you need to have is an updated resume and headshot. Make sure you list every dancing job you've had, no matter how small. You don't need to spend a fortune on pictures. A not too posed black and white shot, 8x10 should suffice. Remember to keep your hair and make up simple. You want to shine and keep the focus on yourself, not your jewelry. Make sure you carry an extra copy of your resume and headshot with you, just in case.

Remain focused at all times and don't stop reaching to fulfill your dream. How many times have you heard the story of persistence paying off? Sometimes the only real difference between those that fail and those that succeed is persistence. It's like a fighter who gets hit, falls on the mat, and then gets up again. Many times you're going to audition for the same directors and choreographers. You're not going to be perfect for every show, but you just might be perfect for an upcoming one, and you'll want to make sure that you're remembered. Make sure that the director sees how interested you are.

Your interaction with your peers is also of great importance. Remember that you're being watched from the minute you walk in the door of an audition. How do you interact with others? Do you smile and make eye contact? Do you appear confident, positive and focused? Do you keep a sense of good-humor about you?

Don't forget to take care of yourself on a regular basis. A good diet, exercise, plenty of sleep and relaxation will help keep you in peak physical condition so you'll be ready for the next audition

Dance audition songs?
I have a dance audition coming up and I have a few song options, I'm just looking for some opinions? I want something I can put emotion into, I just got out of a relationship of 2 years, so I kinda feel like I could use emotions from that for my dance. I'd greatly appreciate if you could list your top three from my choices :) thanks so much! Your Love by Emma Burgess Turning Tables by Adele Where I Stood by Missy Higgins (our officers from last year used this song for a dance so I'm not sure about this one.) Dreaming With a Broken Heart by John Mayer Total Eclipse of the Heart Colorblind by Counting Crows Breathe Me by Sia

Teens or anyone: I'm nervous and sad and worried and excited!?
Okay so this week we just had dance auditions. And I'm not auditioning because I'm a senior. I'm so sad! Dance has be a HUGE part of my life! I'm graduating in May and I'm going to an in state university about 2-3 hours away from home. And I'm going to miss high school and I'm going to miss my friends back here. And I'm going to miss dancing and my mom and my dad and my sister! I'm going to miss all of my teachers! And I'm going to miss dancing so much. I am looking into taking dance classes at college but they don't perform! Which is what makes me sad! I won't have any use for stage make up anymore! My last show at school in May and my last studio recital is in June! I'm choking up as I'm typing this! I graduate at the end of may and I'm a nervous wreck! I'm worrried I'm not going to do as well as I'm doing in high school! I mean yeah I am excited to live in a dorm and I'm excited to meet new people and I'm excited to learn a lot of new things but I mean I kept looking back on the past and thinking how much fun it was and how I never thought about this moment. It's scary in a way. But exciting at the same time! I'm afraid I'm going to be stressed out in college and the work load is going to stress me out and the finance is going to stress me out. Any out there feel the same way? Or felt the same way? Have any advice or kind words to give me?
