Grinding on the Dance Floor: How To Do It and Is It Ok?

Dance forms evolve over the years and there is always a type of dance that some find offensive. Remember when Elvis started shaking his hips? In today's world, the dance form that many find offensive is called "grinding". This article discusses how to grind and asks the question: Is it ok?

Exeter High School in New Hampshire recently made news as they cancelled the high school dance because of this form of dance called grinding. The principal of the school, Victor Sokus, called off the dance because he wanted to give the community time to discuss dancing rules before the school hosted their high school dance.

So, was Victor Sokus right in cancelling the dance? Well, before we come to a conclusion, let's look at grinding to determine if it is in fact too offensive or sexually suggestive for high school students.

Grinding is a form of dance in which the participants, usually two but sometimes many more, rub their bodies against one another. Well, you may ask, doesn't this happen in all dance forms? No, because with grinding the dancers are usually rubbing their genitalia against one another forming what many think is an overly sexual dance.

In fact, when we look at definitions of how to grind, one of the first suggestions is to put your hips together, thereby immediately connecting your bodies. The female usually places herself in front of the guy, who then often places his hands on her hips or buttocks. The male then finds his pelvis attached to her buttocks. Dancing to the top rap songs, the dancers then follow each other's pelvic movements in stride with one another ending up in a dance that Wiki declares "as sexually suggestive as it gets."

So, was Exeter high school right in banning this dance?

Community discussions are always good to have, but banning a dance form will only make it more appealing to the younger crowd. You cannot contain this form of dance.

The history of dance is filled with "banned" dance forms that have evolved into classics. While many people were learning how to salsa dance, others were scorning it as blasphemous. From Elvis Presley to the Tango, dances that were previously thought to be suggestive are now considered a form of art.

Will grinding (also called freak dancing) evolve into an art form? Maybe, maybe not.

For now, parents should advise their children to only dance with known people and do so with caution. While young girls may just be having fun, young boys may get a little overexcited. In fact, several young boys have asked the question, ""what should I do if I get excited when I am doing the grind dance?"

If you are truly against grind dancing, there is a petition to stop grind dancing.

If not, now is the time start learning how to do it!
